Largest Bat Population in New Brunswick Wiped Out by Disease

Investigation of a cave in New Brunswick which is known to have the largest bat population in the province has led to a devastating discovery.  In the winter of 2011 the cave was found to be infected with White-nose Syndrome, an introduced fungal disease with a very high death rate in North American bats.  All of the estimated 6,000 bats that lived in the cave appear to have been wiped out from the disease.  It is believed that between 5.7 and 6.7 million bats have died from this new disease in North America.  It is also predicted that the disease may cause some species of bats to become extinct in Canada and that it will  spread to other regions of the country.
