Eastern Grey Squirrel found to be reservoir for tick-borne diseases
Scientists at Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri) have identified another reservoir for tick-borne ehrlichia, a group of bacteria that can cause disease in both animals and people. Along with white-tailed deer, the eastern grey squirrel has now been confirmed to harbor these pathogens. The study also showed however, that the prevalence of disease causing bacteria in the squirrels was lower in areas with fewer deer suggesting that although the squirrels may become infected with the pathogens, deer are likely a more important wildlife reservoir for these diseases.
