Summer Students!
Introducing CWHC ON/NU’s summer students…
Tonia von Hugo
Hello, my name is Tonia von Hugo and I am a 3rd year Animal Biology student at the University of Guelph. This summer, I am working with Dr. Jane Parmley to assist in the development of case definitions for wildlife diseases, that will be shared by the CWHC and NWHC. I have a strong interest in One Health, with a focus on wildlife and companion animal medicine. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, travelling, and playing with my two cats, Salem and Tink.
Sarah Martone
Hello! My name is Sarah Martone and I am a Master of Public Health student at the University of Guelph. I have an undergraduate degree in Zoology from UofG and a Master of Biomedical Science in Reproductive Biotechnology from UofG. I definitely relish in being a professional student. Our program requires a summer practicum component for us to discover where we want to take our public health careers. I am lucky to work with Dr. Claire Jardine with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative exploring the intersections of wildlife, human and environmental health. My summer project will focus on a One Health approach to leptospirosis in Ontario and in developing various communication pieces.
Simon Jeeves
My name is Simon Jeeves and I am an undergrad Microbiology student at the University of Guelph. Formerly majoring in wildlife biology, I am looking to merge my two fields of study and specialize in research of zoonotic pathogens. This summer I am honoured to be a part of the Jardine Lab at Ontario Veterinary College, working with Dr. Sarah Robinson on studying incidence and prevalence of zoonoses associated with Norway rats and black rats in southern Ontario. Apart from being a self-proclaimed disease nerd, I love birding, making music, and fishing.
Rachel Finer
I am a 4th-year biomedical science student. I have a fascination for wildlife health and zoonotic diseases and I am thankful for the opportunities in research to explore these interests. This summer I am investigating parvovirus in wild carnivores submitted to the CWHC In Ontario between 2007-2019. When I’m not studying, I love hiking, skiing, and horseback riding.
