Red Vent Syndrome in wild Atlantic Salmons in Quebec

Red vent syndrome in wild Atlantic salmons in Quebec. Since 2008, some Atlantic salmons come back in the rivers of Quebec with a red vent. This syndrome seems to be emerging in North Atlantic. It is caused by the presence of numerous parasites called Anisakis simplex in the body wall around the vent. The parasites may be zoonotic if eaten raw, and they can cause allergic reactions in sensitized individuals. Dr Sylvain Larrat, resident at the CCWHC-Quebec, is involved in a study aiming at better characterizing the red vent syndrom and the presence of Anisakis simplex in wild salmons in Quebec.
