DFO cuts have many concerned

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), which includes the Canadian Coast Guard, has sent notice that 400 additional positions are going to be cut.  Combined with a similar scale announcement last December, the potential total loss to the department would be over 1,000 positions.  The decrease in personnel and positions will result in a large-scale reorganization to the structure of the department across the country.  There have already been a number of announcements regarding the closure of DFO offices and the loss of some programs.  The budget cuts to the department are expected to save nearly $80 million.

The cuts have many individuals and organizations concerned regarding the affect this will have on safety and the environment, however, the federal government say the cuts won’t be as dramatic as they seem.
