Deformed fish caught from Lake Athabasca
Deformed fish caught from Lake Athabasca are causing concern over the effects of pollutants from the Alberta oil sands development. Two fish with large lesions were submitted to the Alberta CCWHC laboratory on Monday to determine the cause of the deformities. While members of the public say that this provides further evidence that the oil sands are harming the fish and environment, Alberta Environment suggests that the lesions could be caused from natural occurrences or possibly be wounds from commercial fishing nets. Both parties await the laboratory findings.
