CWHC recognized by Environmental Commissioner of Ontario

According to the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO), wildlife diseases can have serious impacts on both human health and the economy. Monitoring and managing wildlife health is key to minimizing unacceptable risks from disease. This year’s ECO Environmental Protection Report includes a special feature on wildlife disease and recognizes the crucial role of surveillance in wildlife health programs. Particular attention was placed on the CWHC in assessing the effectiveness of Ontario’s policies and actions with respect to wildlife health programs. Sustainable funding for the CWHC was a primary recommendation, along with a key finding that “the CWHC has been a critical and cost-effective component of the province’s success in dealing with wildlife health issues to date”.

The chapter on wildlife disease can be found in Volume 3 of the report which can accessed at https://eco.on.ca/reports/2018-back-to-basics/
