4th Workshop for Canada’s Wildlife Health Professionals in Quebec City

The 4^th Workshop for Canada’s Wildlife Health Professionals, organised jointly with the annual meeting of the Réseau faune et zoo / Quebec Government, was held in Quebec City on April 8 and 9.

Over 120 students, researchers and wildlife professionals, from 11 provinces and territories, gathered during this two days workshop on different wildlife health topics. The first day was dedicated to a workshop on Wildlife Health Risk Assessment and Multi-criteria Decision Analysis. This workshop, which has been prepared for the Wildlife Focal Points of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), was given by Ted Leighton and Jane Parmley of the CWHC. Participants to this workshop had to conduct risk assessments and multi-criteria analyses on a scenario of translocation of bison from Canada to a fictive island. During the second day of this conference, researchers and professionals from different provinces and territories presented oral communications and scientific posters. Topics included moose decline, white nose syndrome in bats, ecology of zoonosis such as tularemia, Lyme disease, West Nile Virus and rabies, diseases of muskoxen, “new” diseases in Canada such as babesiosis in deer and Bornavirus in geese, accidental trapping of eagles and diseases of bass. Simultaneous translation in French and in English was provided to participants. This 4^th workshop, which was greatly appreciated by the participants, was made possible thank to the support of the CWHC, the Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement, de la Faune et des Parcs and the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec.
